Drink driving is a complex, multi-faceted issue which cuts across a number of fields including driver licensing, health, criminal justice and transport issues. It is therefore imperative that solutions to address the drink driving problem are multidisciplinary in nature, supported by a range of stakeholders, whilst also being evidence-based.

The European Drink Driving Forum provides a stage for the open discussion of the challenges and obstacles of the drink driving problem. The Forum also determines priority areas and practical solutions to effectively combat drink driving on Europe's roads, and promote broader awareness of the environment in which these tools and interventions are applied.

This one-day conference, held in Brussels on May 19, 2011, brought together internationally acknowledged experts representing EU institutions, Member State authorities, leading international researchers, road safety practitioners, and representatives from non-governmental organizations and industry to share their knowledge about proven solutions to deal with the problem of drink driving.

The aim of the conference was to learn about experiences in many different jurisdictions, to identify ways to build partnerships across disciplines, and to strengthen the delivery of effective tools to stop drink drivers.

About Drink Driving

In recent years, the issue of drink driving has received increasing attention from governments, safety agencies, industry, the media and the public worldwide. Initially, concern was focused on drink driving in general, but declines in the occurrence of drink driving related incidents have reached a plateau in recent years, raising questions about the magnitude and characteristics of the problem and effective strategies to address it.
